New Zealand tax credits

New Zealand tax residents are eligible for a donation tax credit for all donations they make directly to The Gift Trust, including into their Gift Account, irrespective of when some or all of those funds may be paid out to recipient charities. The donation tax credit reduces the amount of tax you have to pay, and is capped at one-third of your total annual taxable income. If you are planning a one-off donation that is larger than your annual taxable income, you may wish to structurearrow-up-right your donation so as to maximise your potential tax credit.

To claim your donation tax credit, you or your adviser(s) will need to submit your tax receipt(s) from The Gift Trust to the IRD. More information about this process can be found on their websitearrow-up-right.

Trusts, partnerships, and companies are not eligible for New Zealand donation tax credits. However, donations to The Gift Trust by such entities are generally deductible as business expenses.

New Zealand tax receipts

You will generally be issued with a single receipt for all donations you make directly to The Gift Trust at the end of each tax year. This consolidated receipt has been approved by the IRD, and shows the amount and date of each individual donation.

If you donate from multiple legal entities (i.e. from a business or trust as well as from yourself personally), you will receive a separate receipt for each entity. If you wish to receive an individual receipt for each donation, or have special receipting requirements, please let us know.

Donations via international partners

Receipts for donations made via our international partners (such as Every.org and Myriad USA) are issued by the relevant partner organisation. If you need a copy of your receipt, please either contact them directly, or contact us and we can do so on your behalf.
